Te Wānanga

Project title: Te Wānanga

Iwi: This mahi was led by mana whenua from Ngāti Whātua, Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki, alongside kaitiaki from Ngāti Whanaunga, Ngāti Maru, Te Patukirikiri, Te Ākitai Waiohua, Ngāti Te Ata, Ngāti Tamaoho and Te Ahiwaru-Makaurau. Mana whenua artists Tessa Harris and Reuben Kirkwood of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki created artwork reflecting the environment, Richelle Kahui-Mcconnell, and Jarrod Walker installed mussel pods to filter seawater. Uru Whakaaro contributed to the landscape plan in collaboration with Isthmus, Auckland Council, and Ngāti Whātua who grew and implemented planting, and are nurturing this element going forward.

Uru Whakaaro provided ecological design work for the landscape component of Te Wānanga. This project involved collaboration between mana whenua, artists, landscape architects and designers to reimagine, and restore the waterfront at the convergence of whenua and moana as a place where people, marine, and coastal life flourish.
