Maungawhau

Maungawhau // Te Ipu o Mataoho, one of the largest pā in Tāmaki Makaurau, is spiritually, culturally and historically significant. Recently, it has received an integrated landscape design that serves to protect and restore historical features while retaining quality views and enhanced visitor experience. The new boardwalks, seating and specialised native species follow the contours of the tihi and are woven  past  tūāpapa (terraces) and rua (pits for storing crops). Kōhatu (stone) used in the restoration planting were returned to the maunga from previously being quarried to build the Mount Eden prison. With more than a million people visiting Maungawhau annually this design can help to protect these significant features and minimise impact on the whenua.

Mana Whenua, Maunga authority, Isthmus Group, Uru Whakaaro, design and construction specialists; HEB Construction, Stellar Projects, and Wildlands  were among the team to bring this unique build to life.
