Para Kore Ki Tāmaki is a Zero Waste programme currently delivered by Uru Whakaaro across the Auckland Region. Through education and on the ground practical support we hope to empower Māori communities to take action on waste. We work with marae, kura, festivals, events and welcome collaboration from across all communities.

Whakapapa

In 2016 Richelle Kahui McConnell and Charmaine Bailie on behalf of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei (NWO) created Para Kore ki Tāmaki programme. This was delivered by Okāhu Rākau alongside other māra programmes like Kāinga Ora - Māra / Para kore with whānau at home, Kupe Street community māra (which started in 2009 and restarted in 2012) Auckland City Mission Māra- all evolving over this time. Para kore was across all NWO operations including Puna Reo, Corporate offices and Okāhu Rākau Native plant nursery. Richelle lead a small dedicated team who shared this message out with marae such as Piritahi, Matariki, Papatūānuku, Otamatea, Rewiti, Manurewa, Hoani Waititi. Lionel Hotene and Eruini Hawke, Lorene(Lors) Martin and later Stephanie Robb all shared in the mahi of this kaupapa.

In 2019 Mealofa Ltd took on sole management evolving the program to include rangatahi leadership programmes. Marine, climate action and wānanga collaborations. This period saw an extensive reach and growth in the programme. At this time rangatahi Waiata Rameka-Tupe, Pia, and Koha Kahui- McConnell, Brooklin Robb joined the growing team. Moana Tāmariki-Pohe joined as kaiāwhina in 2020 to guide alongside Richelle in the last year.

In February 2021, the Para Kore Ki Tāmaki programme underwent a big change and the management was transferred from Mealofa following the loss of founding mana wahine and leader Richelle Kahui-McConnell in October 2020 to Uru Whakaaro. We are now continuing with the program management to manaaki rangatahi, tikanga and principles moving forward

In April of this year, our team led the Zero Waste Event Management for ASB Polyfest. Our main role at this event was to advocate for consumer consciousness around waste management from procurement to disposal- and to deliver education around this to the wider public. Using this methodology, our team worked hard on diverting waste at the ASB Polyfest, away from landfill and Papatūānuku.

We look forward to continuing with Para Kore kaupapa and are excited about potential collaborations and new initiatives. Please get in touch- we would like to hear how we might support your Para Kore aspirations.
