Protection of indigenous biodiversity, in particular our taonga species, is a critical element in the restoration practice life cycle. Nurseries have a key role to play in the prevention and mitigation of pests and disease spread. Nurseries can be a place to raise awareness and provide education to staff, volunteers and the wider community.
This guide aims to support kaitiaki and community nurseries with this biosecurity work, providing guidance on how to identify biosecurity risks, how to create your biosecurity nursery management plan and the methodology with which to carry out this work.
An important step in both prevention and mitigation of issues is to keep plants in good health throughout all stages of plant growth, strong healthy robust plants have a greater chance of fighting of the attack of common nursery pest and diseases. This guide aims to help with recognising the difference between mechanical damage and biological/disease issues.
